Does Exactly What It Says, And Still Comes Up Short September 19, 2009

I can't be too critical of a product that does exactly what it says it will, but the bottom line is that it really doesn't do that much.
More and more organizations will not allow you to use harnesses unless your seat is factory equipped to allow for a submarine belt(s), and some also require that you have a cage or rollbar installed. I thought the CG-Lock would be a low cost alternative for providing some extra support without buying a new seat, or modifying my car. A low enough cost that if I didn't like them, that I wouldn't feel like I had invested too much in the experiment.
At first glance harnesses seem only to be a safety device, superior to three point belts, but another very real benefit of harnesses is that they hold you in place so that you are using your arms, shoulders, hands only to steer the car instead of steering and counteracting lateral G forces from cornering. While the CG-Lock allows you to really cinch down the lap belt your torso and shoulders are still free to move about (even if you lock your inertia reel) so the overall effect is insignificant, you still need to really hold onto the steering wheel for lateral support.
- If you have bucket seats, and your bottom fits the seat pretty snugly, you do not need this product.
- If you have bucket seats with significant side and shoulder bolsters, you DEFINITELY DO NOT NEED this product.
- If you are taking a pickup, or a Galaxie 500, something with slippery bench seats, to an autocross this product is worth a try.
The CG-Lock is well made, from good materials, well designed, easy to use, easy to install and remove (the instructor version). Technically there are no faults with it, but their web site claims, "the CG-Lock has been proven to give a driver 80 per cent of the benefits of a race harness", which, to be kind, is a very, very optimistic assessment, in my estimation it would be more like 10-15% better than three point belts alone.
Many reviews of this product mention locking down child safety seats better, or alleviating lower back pain, if you are considering buying this product for those sorts of reasons then press on. If you are looking at this product to help lock you in place for track driving, autocross, or even spirited street driving then keep your expectations very low, the effect is negligible.
